The Attorney General’s Office on Thursday filed an appeal against the Jakarta High Court ruling that punished former National Police detective unit chief Susno Duadji with three-and-a-half years in prison.

“It [the appeal] is being registered today at 12,” said spokesman of the AGO Noor Rachmad.

Susno was found guilty by the South Jakarta District Court and the Jakarta High Court for receiving bribes. The Jakarta High Court sentenced him to serve three-and-a-half years behind bars. However, the court did not detain Susno, so he remains free.

Noor declined to explain the reason behind the appeal, only stating that the consideration was being drafted.

Prosecutors had demanded seven years for Susno, who was named a suspect by police two months after he shocked the nation with public allegations that senior police officials had acted as case brokers in a money-laundering investigation involving rogue taxman Gayus Tambunan.

On Thursday, Susno’s lawyer Ari Yusuf Amir said that he worked with the National Police legal team to also draft an appeal.

Ari said he filed the appeal because the previous trials in the South Jakarta District Court and the Jakarta High Court did not consider the witness explanation that no one saw Susno receiving bribes. He also wants the Supreme Court to realize that his client was the whistle blower and the case against him is legally weak.
