Bali Police are investigating the brutal murder of a Japanese woman, the second involving a Japanese tourist in the space of three months.

Sr. Com. Gde Sugianyar said the decomposing body of the victim, identified as Hiromi Shimada, 41, was found in a rented house on Jalan Sada Sari, Kuta, on Sunday morning.

“She was found naked and her legs were tied with a piece of clothing,” Sugianyar said.

He said the victim had been stabbed 10 times in the abdomen and chest, was lying in a pool of blood and had swelling to her right eye from what appeared to be a beating.

Sugianyar said two knives apparently used in the murder had been recovered from the house.

He said the victim was found by locals who were alerted by a smell emanating from the home, about one kilometer from Kuta Beach. Dozens of bottles of alcohol and water were found inside the house.

Made Sudista, a neighbor, said Shimada frequently brought different men back to her house. “[Her] men were always changing,” he said.

Denpasar Police Chief Sr. Com. Gede Alit Widana said police believed the victim had been murdered two days before her body was found.

He said it appeared the motive was most likely revenge related but police were still considering the possibility that rape and robbery were behind the gruesome murder.

Widana said that police had questioned a dozen people, including Shimada’s former husband, an Indonesian, who said she had a number of unresolved problems, including heavy debts because she had not been working, and that she had overstayed her visa by two months.

Widana said the husband had said the Japanese consulate was aware of the victim’s situation and had been planning to help repatriate Shimada in mid January.

Sugianyar said the victim’s body had been taken to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar for an autopsy. “We have also contacted the Japanese consulate to inform her family.”

The half-naked body of Rika Kasano, 33, another Japanese woman, was found in nearby Tuban on Sept. 28.

Police arrested the alleged murderer, David Wicaksono, 26, of Malang, East Java, on Oct. 2. He has allegedly admitted that he raped and killed Kasano.

Widana said that the motives of each of the murders were quite different.

“The Kasano [case] involved rape and robbery. While Shimada did not have any valuable belongings,” he said.
