Officials in Mukomuko district, Bengkulu province, plan to cull 2,000 stray dogs this year in a bid to prevent a possible rabies outbreak in the area.

Elsandi, the head of the local animal husbandry agency, said on Thursday that the program would be carried out in all 15 subdistricts and 148 villages across Mukomuko throughout 2012.

He said the cull, with a budget of Rp 50 million ($5,600), was being carried out to keep the population of stray dogs in check, in anticipation of a possible rabies outbreak.

Scores of people died from the disease in Bali following an outbreak there in 2008. A massive campaign to cull the island’s hundreds of thousands of stray dogs has been widely credited for bringing the outbreak there under control.
