At least one person has been killed in clashes between two long-feuding communities in Palu, Central Sulawesi, on Saturday.
The fierce fighting comes as tourism ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) meet in Manado, North Sulawesi.
There are reports that many more people have been injured and that cars and homes have been set ablaze.
Reports from the scene of the violence say a running brawl erupted between people from the neighboring subdistricts of Nunu and Tavanjuka at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Ridwan, 32, who died after he was shot in the chest.
“[Ridwan’s] house is only 400 meters from where people were throwing stones and fighting,” he said.
Both groups have a history of violence.
Attempts to resolve the issues by both security officials and elders from both groups have failed.
