Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. Some 60 percent of the islands in the archipelago that comprises the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tengarra (NTT) still do not have names, NTT Governor Frans Lebu Raya said on Monday.

Speaking during a meeting with the province’s 290 subdistrict heads, Lebu Raya said of NTT’s 1,192 islands, 719 were nameless.

“Therefore, all parties, including the subdistrict heads, should give serious attention to them,” he said.

He said it was important the islands were named — and explored — so they were not claimed by other countries.
