Part of the Jakarta-Merak toll road remains shut after being submerged under floodwaters spilling from the Cijung River near the kilometer 58 mark.

“Activity on the toll road has come to a total halt since 6 this morning because vehicles traveling from Jakarta to Merak, and vice-versa, cannot proceed,” Hari Wirakusumah, a spokesman for the tollway operator, said on Sunday.

The road was covered to a depth of around 1.2 meters, Hari said, adding that other sections of the roadway were being occupied by evacuees.

“We are using one lane of the tollway as a refuge for people whose homes are flooded,” he said.

Hari added that in 2001 the same section of road was also closed due to flooding.

Banten’s Transportation Agency deployed staff to help motorists navigate an alternative route via Jalan Raya Serang.

Floodwaters escaping from rain-swollen rivers have also inundated thousands of homes in three districts across Banten province.
