Vehicle theft was the most widespread crime in Depok in 2011, while Cimanggis took top spot as the most crime-infested area in the West Java city.

Depok Police chief Mulyadi Kaharni said on Saturday that four to five motor vehicles were stolen in the city each week.

“A lot of the thefts take place because of owners’ carelessness,” he said.

“Many bikes are parked in an unsecured condition. Most of the thefts occurred close to the homes of the vehicle owners.”

To combat the crime, Mulyadi said that police would increase checkpoint hours.

“Before, we only set up checkpoints until 1 a.m., but now we’ll extend it to the morning,” he said.

“However, there are indications that a lot of the theft occurs later in the day.”

Mulyadi said police had solved only 65 of the 476 vehicle theft cases reported.

He called on residents to lock up their cars and motorcycles when parking. “A simple lock can be enough to deter a would-be thief,” he said.

Meanwhile, a newly released report stated that Depok’s Cimanggis district had the most incidents of crime.

The report showed that there were 229 reports of crime in the district, including 139 incidents of theft and robbery and 131 incidents of vehicle theft.

The district of Beji came in second with 261 reported incidents of crime, while Pancoran Mas was next with 219 reports of crime last year.

Many crimes in Indonesia are not reported to law enforcement authorities.
