House Speaker Marzuki Alie on Thursday shrugged off a looming inquiry by the House of Representatives Ethics Council, saying the people who filed the complaint against him did not understand his work.

“I don’t need to make any comment. Let the Ethics Council work,” he said.

Marzuki said he doubted that the group understood his job. He added that he would leave to the council the two names that were mentioned by the group as conflicted by criminal convictions.

Nine antigraft groups and watchdogs last week submitted a report to the Ethics Council claiming Marzuki’s actions since he became speaker five months ago had tarnished the House’s image.

Sebastian Salang, chairman of Concerned Citizens for the Indonesian Parliament (Formappi), at that time said Marzuki often positioned himself as a speaker for the Democrats and the government, rather than the House.

On Wednesday, the group reported six sitting lawmakers, including two with criminal convictions, to the Ethics Council. They demanded that the House take disciplinary action against Democratic Party member As’ad Syam and Muhammad Izzul Islam of the United Development Party (PPP).

As’ad was convicted of corruption, and Izzul of falsifying his high school certificate.

Both have yet to begin their jail terms.

The group also reported that another PPP lawmaker, Dimyati Natakusumah, had been accused of bribing councilors to approve a Rp 200 billion ($21.4 million) loan when he served as Pandeglang district chief in Banten.

The other three lawmakers are the Golkar Party’s Markus Nari, Nurdirman Munir and Chairuman Harahap, accused by the group of misconduct by triggering chaos in the House on March 2 ahead of the Bank Century bailout vote.

Ethics Council chairman Gayus Lumbuun said Marzuki and the six other lawmakers who had been reported by the group would be processed when the council resumed its work next month.

Gayus said that if the evidence presented was complete, the council could summon Marzuki for clarification.
