Is she a smoker? If she is I believe it is absolutely essential that it is revealed.

Jakarta. Indonesian news portals on Sunday suggested that the health of Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, Indonesia’s Minister of Health, had taken a turn for the worse. Endang is reportedly suffering from lung cancer and had sought treatment in Guangzhou, China, according to Bambang Sulistomo, a special presidential staffer for politics and health policies.

The reports could not immediately be confirmed.

Bambang was quoted by Detik.com as saying that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was well aware of Endang’s condition and had provided the government’s team of doctors with special instructions.

“[President Yudhoyono] is aware. He has instructed the team of doctors to assist in her recovery as best they can,” Bambang told the portal on Sunday evening.

“She has received treatment both here and overseas. She has traveled to Guangzhou several times. I am not aware exactly when. She is recovering and Insyah Allah, her condition can hopefully be controlled. I am not aware which stadium [cancer level] she has reached because I have not read her medical records. But, it is under control,” Bambang said, adding that she had been diagnosed following a clinical check in October last year.

“There had been no symptoms up until then. The news was a real shock. Whenever she led meetings or made working visits, she always looked healthy.”

A career health official, Endang had been a surprise choice in President Yudhoyono’s 2009 cabinet. Nila Anfasa Moeloek had been expected to get the health post.
