Indonesia's information and communications technology (ICT) is developing in leaps and bounds, with the country being listed by a global report as the most ICT-connected among emerging economies.
According to the 2010-2011 Global Information Technology Report (GITR), released on Tuesday, Indonesia made the greatest progress of any economy to its Networked Readiness Index (NRI), jumping 14 places from a rank of 67 in 2010 to 53 out of 138 economies.
Indonesia topped a rank among major emerging European and South American economies — with Brazil ranked at 56, South Africa at 61, Poland at 62, Greece at 64, Turkey at 71, the Russian Federation at 77 and Argentina at 96.
However, Indonesia fared less well compared to two fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) members, Singapore and Malaysia, which ranked 2nd and 28th respectively.
The other Asean countries trailed behind Indonesia. Vietnam was ranked at 55, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand at 58. The Philippines and Cambodia are the region's least wired countries, ranked 86th and 11th respectively. East Timor, which seceded from Indonesia in 1999 and now a prospective Asean member, ranked 136th in the report.
With an overall score of 3.92, Indonesia sits at 5th place among lower-income countries.
Indonesia's significant improvement to its NRI indicates development in three main areas: general business, regulatory and infrastructure environment for ICT; the readiness of individuals, businesses and governments to use and benefit from ICT; and the actual usage of available ICT.
The 2010-2011 GITR, now in its 10th year, is titled “Transformations 2.0” and was released by Davos-based World Economic Forum.
