387165My my my, we certainly have hit a few nerves here.
The discussion is surely about the Minister and his dream of a porn free internet Indonesia by Ramadan. What has this to do with personal attacks and corruption?
The minister is simply saying what he feels is appropriate to his party lines and more importantly to his religious conviction. He is doing what he is paid for. As minister for communications this is his job. There are plain and simple Laws in this country that say porn is illegal. Like it or not it is a law and he is determined to implement it.
Corruption and Bules loving the country? Please this is out of place here. The debate is on the Minister's dream of insuring the faithful and children have the protection of the country's current law and his ability as Minister to implement it.
“We are just putting the law into practice,” Tifatul said.
What is wrong with that? We may not like the laws but he is one of a few trying to implement a law. Now this is definitely a step in the right direction.
To the Indonesians writing here, please tone down the anti-bule attacks.
To the I love Indonesia bules, please if you do love the country, support the minister who is trying to implement the laws. Whether you like or agree with the law is irrelevant, if you love the country as much as you claim then do so by supporting people who try to do their job by implementing laws of the country. You never know, one day there might be one that stands up and does the same for anti-corruption... would we all be so vociferous about that?
Islamic based parties in this country should not meddle in local politics....If Indonesia should remain secular then be it. Unfortunately it looks more doubtful as the religious rights accelerate the speed to make Indonesia the next despicable Taliban State.
Are you (conservatives, radicals, fundamentalists where ever you may be abroad or locally) all satisfied by influencing your conservative none sense religious ideas in Indonesia and beyond. We are not asking Indonesia to be morally Westernized but to leave Indonesia as a country to breathe freely from having 7th century Islamic religious ideas that do not conform with the 21st century...PERIOD.
And what could possibly be next? The way we speak, the way we dress, the way we raise a family, the way we make friends with the same sex and the opposite sex...Leave us with the freedom humans should deserve to live once in their life time on this damn planet. Religious hypocrites everywhere !!!
Pribarmi-Rayap - What is your problem?
You have some serious hang-ups about non-Indonesians - particularly UK - US and Australians.
Maybe you have missed some of what is going on daily here - but Indonesia has pretty much got the market in corruption sown up.
In fact, in corruption was an Olympic sport Indonesia would take Gold, Silver and Bronze...
@Pribumi-Raya - another discharge of bule hate and insult? As your written English is nearly perfect and with well constructed sentences and words (far better than mine) I assume that, if you are really an Indonesian (which I suspect, you are not), you had a higher Western education! But something must have ignited your anger - or, alternatively, you are just trying to get responses for your various postings today for some (yet) unspecified reasons.
Please read Jeanne Harchette's, Marko's and Chris' comments carefully - I believe it reflects far better how most resident foreigners (partially desperate) care about our host country than you are trying to project!
P-R, I have to agree with Jeanne here. It is obvious that many (not all) bule here love this country more than many Indonesians do.
2 simple reasons.
1) These bule are still here.
2) Most Indonesians want to leave.
Raising the flag, but next throwing your plastic wrappers/bottles/etc. on the ground is maybe not a big deal to you, but it says a lot about the mentality of the people, and their supposed love for their country.
And the corruption case is clear. As long as the middle class can be kept happy with some new malls and subsidized gasoline, the "Elite" can keep plundering.
Jakarta. Indonesian Communication and Information Technology Minister Tifatul Sembiring says he hopes all pornographic Web sites will be blocked before Ramadan — and is warning that even written sentences could be classified as violating the law.
The outspoken minister from the Islam-based Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) said on Thursday that he hoped the controversial new ministry plan would be enacted before the holy fasting month begins on August 11 so that pornography would not interfere with Islamic religious obligations.
Speaking at the Presidential Palace, Tifatul said the ministry was compelled by the Anti-Pornography Law to “protect citizens from the dangers of pornography.”
“We are just putting the law into practice,” Tifatul said.
He could not say which Web sites the ministry would block but said it would be done on a “massive scale.”
Tifatul also warned people to be aware of the consequences if they violated the law.
“Please be very careful because one can face legal action just by spreading pornographic sentences because it’s part of pornography.”
On Wednesday, Tifatul acknowledged that he was aware that blocking all Web sites with pornographic content would be nearly impossible.
However, he said, with an aggressive campaign and random checks, the government expected that children would have very limited access to such sites.
“We’ve started by holding meetings with Internet service providers because they’re the ones with the power to grant access to the Internet across Indonesia,” he said.
Tifatul has previously said the move was driven by a request from the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) to restrict access to pornography on the Internet.
