Jakarta. Former National Police chief of detectives Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji was brought before prosecutors on Wednesday after police filed a second criminal charge against the whistle-blowing officer.

Susno is accused of misusing the security fund for the West Java elections when he became the province's police chief in 2008.

His visit to the South Jakarta prosecutor's office coincided with the end of his detention term for a previous charge, in which Susno was accused of taking a bribe from a lawyer representing a fish farm.

"Susno should be freed from detention today concerning the [fish farm] case, but the police have filed a second case and the detention term will start again from today," said Ary Yusuf Amir, an attorney for Susno. "I am wondering if this is intentional."

South Jakarta Chief Prosecutor Yusuf said separately that the trial would start soon after the Muslim holiday of Lebaran next month.

"The two criminal cases against Susno will be combined into one indictment to allow for an efficient trial," the prosecutor told reporters.

He denied allegations that the detention term was extended based on the new charge.

"Susno is still being detained for the first case. A suspect cannot be detained at the same time based on two cases," he said.

Susno refused to talk with reporters upon leaving the office. He only smiled and responded to one question: "yes, I'm fasting now."
