The Corruption Eradication Commission broke into the movie business on Thursday as it took its antigraft message to the silver screen.
“Us Against Corruption,” which the commission known as the KPK produced to educate people about the risk of graft, had its premiere at Djakarta Theater.
“Through this event, the commission hopes to use the medium of film to encourage public support for efforts aimed at preventing corruption,” KPK head Abraham Samad said.
He said the movie could prove a useful and entertaining way to campaign against corruption.
KPK commissioner Busyro Muqoddas served as executive producer of the movie.
“This film was born from the contemplations of our friends within the KPK,” he said after the screening.
“How can we tackle corruption systematically, besides through the legal system? How can it be done through a cultural approach? And we settled on the medium of film.”
The film is composed of four shorts, all tied together by a common thread. Each of the shorts was made by a young Indonesian filmmaker.
“Rumah Perkara” (“House of Cases”) was made by Emil Heradi; “Selamat Siang Risa!” (“Good Afternoon Risa!”) by Ine Febriyanti; “Psssttt … Jangan Bilang Siapa-Siapa” (“Psssttt … Don’t Tell Anyone”) by Chairun Nissa; and “Aku Padamu” (“I Need You”) by Lasja F. Susanto.
The film sprang out of a story idea contest held in September 2010. The winning narratives were polished by media figures, social media activists, journalists and the KPK leadership.
People involved with the film said they hoped it could guide and inspire people to reflect on themselves and their surroundings.
The movie, which stars Nicholas Saputra, Teuku Rifnuwikana, Revalina S. Temat, Ringgo Agus Rahman and Tora Sudiro, will not be shown at commercial cinemas. Instead it will be taken around to major cities throughout the country for special screenings.
The purpose of making the film was certainly not commercial success, the producers said.
