Prison Officials Sanctioned for Freddy’s Preferential Treatment
An internal probe conducted by the Justice and Human Rights Ministry has found two Cipinang Prison officials guilty of accepting money to provide preferential treatment to death-row inmate Freddy Budiman.
“The investigation by the inspectorate general proves that the photo of the office that was published in media reports is indeed the office of the head of the working activities section,” Amir said.
Freddy’s girlfriend, Vonny Rossyane, gave pictures of the room in question to the media. She claimed to have been permitted to have sex and consume drugs with Freddy.
Justice and Human Rights Minister Amnir Syamsudin identified the two officials as Abner Jolando, who heads the prison’s work-training program, and Irwan Syahputra, who also works toward preparing prisoners for the workplace.
The two officials, Amnir said, “were guilty of abusing their authority by using a prison office to allow [Freddy] to receive visits from friends and family for fees between Rp 1.5 million ($150) and Rp 2 million.”
Amnir would not say what punishment the two officials would incur, but they will be mindful that the head of the prison, Thurman Saud Hutapea, was removed from his post.
Freddy has since been transferred to Kambangan maximum security prison in Central Java. He was was sentenced to death on July 15 by the West Jakarta municipal court after he was found guilty of organizing an attempt from prison to smuggle 1.4 million ecstasy pills from China.
