The Denpasar District Court on Thursday heard a guilty plea from Yao Noriyoshi, 44, in response to the prosecutor’s indictment that he smuggled 1.4 grams of marijuana and 1.6 grams of hashish into Bali on June 28.

Noriyoshi was arrested by customs officials as he passed through Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport after arriving from Osaka, Japan.

The prosecution alleged that the car dealership employee tried to throw a black-taped drugs package away as his belongings were being checked in the X-ray machine in the arrivals hall.

According to prosecutors, the drugs had a street value of Rp 4.2 million ($466), which means Noriyoshi faces a penalty under the 2009 Narcotics Law of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to Rp 10 billion.
