Spanish singer Julio Iglesias did not disappoint the fans who packed the ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton Pacific Place in Jakarta on Sunday night for his concert.
The 68-year-old renowned vocalist said he was happy to be back again in Indonesia, a country close to his heart.
“There are a lot of reasons why I love this country so much,” Iglesias said after finishing his first two songs in Spanish during the “Julio Iglesias — Live in Jakarta” concert, a joint presentation by BeritaSatu Media Holdings, which is affiliated with the Jakarta Globe, and Java Festival Production.
“I have a lot of friends here, and I also met my wife here,” he said. “So many years, so many memories.”
Iglesias has been to Indonesia many times, as many as 50 by his count, as both a tourist and a performer.
The “Spanish Frank Sinatra” sang 20 songs during the concert, mostly in Spanish, a language many people in the audience struggled to understand.
But when his hit song “Crazy” came on, the crowd cheered and sang along.
Iglesias seemed to manage his vocals well, though he did not sing as “powerfully as when he was younger,” said senior Indonesian singer Hetty Koes Endang, who attended the concert.
“But as always, he sings from the heart, and that is just excellent,” she said.
Iglesias was accompanied by his three backing singers, all beautiful women. Playing off his reputation, he joked about the women in his life.
“Wherever I go, people ask me how many girlfriends I’ve had in my life. They say there are 6,000, but that’s not true,” he said, prompting the audience to burst into laughter.
Though he did not sing the hit song “When I Need You,” Iglesias seemed to please his fans.
“It’s wonderful. He is great as always,” said one fan, Alexander Effendie.
After the concert, Iglesias told the Jakarta Globe he was pleased with the performance.
“I feel wonderful. I love Indonesia,” he said.
In four decades, Iglesias has sold more than 350 million copies of his 79 albums, making him one of the 15 highest-selling musical artists of all time.
His 1994 album “Crazy” sold 15 million copies in the United States alone and went Platinum in Britain. His latest album, “Numero 1,” which is a compilation of past hits, was released in March.
In 1983, Iglesias was acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records for havi
