Bogor. A would-be migrant worker in Bogor reported her placement agent to the police on Wednesday for allegedly torturing her and six other workers.

Nuvita, 30, said Mahmud, 40, had repeatedly beaten her, causing disfigurement to her hands, waist and head.

“I was promised that I would be able to work in Malaysia,” she said, adding that after she arrived at the placement agent’s training facility, she and six other workers had not been allowed to leave and were beaten nearly every day.

She escaped after one week in the facility and went to the Bogor Police on Tuesday.

Police who went to the facility in Citeureup subdistrict on Wednesday discovered that the training site had been abandoned and that Mahmud had fled, taking the six other workers.

“We are still investigating the case and questioning witnesses,” Bogor Police chief detective Comr. Imron Ernawan said.

Also in Bogor, 33 people said they had been duped by Yayat Srikandi, 52, who claimed to operate a travel agency organizing minor Hajj pilgrimages to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

Agus Shalim, 59, said Yayat had run off with nearly Rp 1 billion ($113,000) in pilgrims’ money.

“We were promised to leave on February 2, but as of [Tuesday] there has been no word on when we would leave,” Agus said.

He also said he felt responsible for convincing the other pilgrims to book through Yayat.

“I compensated them using my personal money,” he said, adding that each pilgrim had given around Rp 30 million.
