A women’s rights group has criticized a move by North Aceh’s district head to ban women in the area from dancing in public places.

Muhammad Thaib, the district chief, on Saturday said that he had banned all adult women from dancing when welcoming guests in North Aceh, adding that only children should perform the tradition.

“I’m very glad to welcome our guests with Aceh culture,” Thaib said as quoted by Tempo on Saturday. “But cultural preservation should not damage Islamic Shariah values, such as dancing performed by adult women.”

Masruchah, deputy chair of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), told the Jakarta Globe on Saturday that Thaib violated the rights of women to express themselves in an art such as dancing.

“Indonesia upholds the constitution, and it guarantees all citizens the right to express themselves, including in dancing,” Masruchah said. “Dancing is apart of Indonesian culture to show people the local tradition. It should not be linked to someone’s opinion about Islam. Islam indeed supports art and the right to express.”

Thaib said that the ban was in line with the spirit of Islamic Shariah, which he claimed was supported by North Aceh residents.

“Such activities that go against Shariah should be banned according to the mandate of the ulema,” he said, adding that if he did not ban public dancing it would reflect on him as a bad leader.

The North Aceh Ulema Consultative Assembly (MPU) supported Thaib’s ban, calling the move a positive innovation.

Mustafa Ahmad, head of the MPU, said that Aceh’s traditional dances, including the Saman dance, were evil because it involved body movement, as quoted by Atjehlink.com.

Masruchah also said that the district head should do something against men who might look at women’s bodies in a negative way.

“The interpretation to body movements, whether done by children or adults, lies in the heads of men. Why should women be blamed if men easily get aroused?”

Masruchah said that the Home Affairs Ministry should ensure that all regional heads understand the constitution and human rights.

Home Affairs Ministry spokesman Reydonnyzar Moenek told the Jakarta Globe on Saturday that he had not heard about the ban and would seek information on whether the ban was already written in a regulation before making a comment.

More evidence showing Islam destroying Indonesia’s rich and varied culture. Sad to see an imported idea changing so much of the fabric that makes the Archipelago so unique and beautiful.

    • Bigotry

Guess you think Car Nur and Gus Dur was also destroying Indonesia’s rich and varied culture.

      • human2

Gus Dur was trying to uphold Indonesian culture. He was a wise and open minded individual who believed strongly in Pancasila. Unfortunately the general public saw him as embarrassing due to his old age and poor eyesight. The made fun of him and ridiculed him and didn’t listen to his voice. This has led to Pancasila becoming a fictional idea which is not practiced in Indonesia. Again Car Nur is highly educated and wise, unfortunately not involved in central government so unable to really make a difference when is comes to destruction of local cultures by extreme mindsets who are following a very alien culture.
The sad part is that Muslims from countries practicing Sharia are immigrating to escape the stifling control and violence that often goes hand in hand with it….

From the 8th >13th century Islam invited scholars, intelligent people to work for them, since then Allah works in mysterious ways.

That’s why it’s called dancing. If there was no body movement it would be called playing statues. Where do they get these officials from???

  • Petr Smrz

I guess when the Malays rescue the heritage (like Tor-Tor) again there will not be huge violent protests then?

  • sheldon archer

Soon they will ban them from breathing in public

why you people arguing about whether the rule should be applied or not when the local agreed to it
I, as a local, also agree to the government with this new rule

    • Roland

Jizy – prove it that the local agreed to it. You should know better than that – this is the common approach by the “government” (which this fellow is NOT!) – simply claim that it has the support of the vast majority of people when introducing yet another “new” Shariah values rule…

      • Jizy

I don’t know what the current government trying to get by applying this new rule, all I know is most adult people in this region, my region, they really want this syari’ah to be applied fully

        • TalkingEid

How do you know? Did you ask them all? Please give us the numbers of people you interviewed, and the percentage who supported / opposed this move.

          • Abdul M

Jizy, Im part of a team of Muslims “the 80%” that are moderates. We are forming a large movement to restore Indonesia back to where it should be (in harmony with humanity) This includes going to the FPI HQ and bringing the fight to them and anyone who supports them. Aceh will also be restored. If you not on our side leave Indonesia now.

          • Jizy

oh I think that harmony must involve free live without any rule including free sex, etc

          • TalkingEid

Usual Islamic obsession with sex – now dancing = free sex. You need to get out more Jizy.

        according to my IP?

          Jizzy

your IP says you are in Finland.

OR of course your provider could be stealing the service, They are probably Indonesian after all. – 50/50 to close to call

Mine shows Ukraine BTW … because I don’t want nosy radical Indonesians checking out what I do online and then putting me to the sword if I read Das Kapital or Kampung Klit

PLEASE do not post your personal details I really do not care that you are retarding or allowing double application of moral standards, you mean nothing to me.

Do I feel sorry for the young and vulnerable who have no choice? Well that is a yes

I look forward to seeing the Aceh dancers again at this years Bali Arts Festival…

You are criminal by discriminating against the rights of others.

Take your unproven sharia and go back to Arabia where you are welcome.
This autonomy crap must go if you insist on stupidity.
The government in Jakarta must admit failure and realise that Aceh is no longer part of Indonesiastan; unless of course this is the direction that the national government is going.

      • Jizy

what kind of rights is that?
when you show your body part to seduce others, then resulting in unwanted action like raping, etc
is that what you people with your human rights want?
        sick of you all…

        • devine

You are the sick one here Jizy. If you would have enjoyed a proper education then you would know that rape is agression and has nothing, nothing at all to do with how a woman dresses…
          ____
Have you been to i.e. Singapore? Notice all the long uncoverd legs there and generally often a lot of skin shown? How comes that much much less woman are raped there than here???

          • human2

Rape of women because of the clothes they wear is a sign of a weak mind. A true man knows that he is physically stronger than women. A true man can see a woman clothed or not and respect her. A true man does not need society nor religion to control him. He has the strength to control himself and uses his strength to support and love his wife while seeing other women as people equally deserving of being treated with honor and the up most respect.

What you are saying Jizzy is that Muslim men are weak and unable to control themselves. They disrespect women and need religion to control them and to allow their wives little to no independence. The number of highly educated women I meet here who are not allowed to work is astonishing. Women deserve more than this. I get thanked by my wife all the time for supporting her in every endeavor and her career. She is smart, ambitious and independent. She doesn’t need me she wants to be with me. This is how a marriage should work and this is how respect is given and received.
I show u strength while you admit your weakness….

          • Jizy

          • human2

I do believe in God but i don’t believe that people need religion to know right from wrong. I believe that men should be able to control themselves without laws or rules which remove temptation all together from their lives again this shows weakness and lack of control. Remember our control and wisdom is what separates us from the animals.
This reminds me somewhat of fasting where no one is allowed to see people eat and all warungs are closed. A true test of someone fasting is watching someone drinking a coke and eating a burger remove all temptation and the test of will power is removed. Everything is pointing towards the outsiders having stronger character, will power and ability to respect women and minorities as a whole.

Are you frightened of the grownups who don’t believe in god, Jizy? Does it make you want to run away and hide? I don’t believe in god, Jizy..Does that make you feel afraid just a little? I’m not scared to say what I think. My thoughts aren’t dictated to me, or found in any so-called holy book. I know right from wrong without checking with an imam. Imagine that.

Outsiders boy oh boy Jizzy u are like a caricature of every thing that needs to change about Indonesia. Why would you call the people posting outsiders as many have been here for 10 + years. Indonesia is my home. I would not see you as an outsider if you lived in the country i was born in. Time to grow up and if you do you may start to see that people who post on here actually love Indonesia and it’s culture. The sad thing is we can see it changing for the worse and you, as an insider can not?

      • Muffinman

        Here here ! human2 !
I get the impression that like both you and I, a lot of posters here are compelled to comment because they do care a lot about Indonesia. I have lived here over half my life and have an Indonesian wife and family.
I would like to enroll my daughter in a traditional dance class, sadly they are a lot harder to find than you would think. It seems to me Indonesia is loosing a lot of their cultural identity as it gives way to the Sharia bullies.

but that is the point… why don’t (some) Muslims just allow other people to live their own lives?? By making laws dictating what they can wear, who they can kiss, when they can dance and more , you are not allowing people to live as they wish and you are not allowing them to live their own lives. When they do not conform you then selectively abuse them even such as some minorities this means killing

Now I REALLY feel sorry for the goats!

  • MadWorld

IF I understand correctly, Indonesia have received some gold medal .

  • MadWorld

Dancing to a non-moslim is usually associated with glee & or happiness. I can’t imagine the aceh’s women start to do pole dancing, in the street’s light-pole.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dewi.thompson.9 Dewi Thompson

True Mad but some guys in Aceh just cannot maintain or have self control over themselves.

      • MadWorld

Let others enjoy the dance, and castrate yourself in the name of Allah.

Can’t wait that ALL the above named animals will get their burqas.

  • barkhov

because apparently having sex with 5 will kill you, as happened that time to someone who got raped by his wives and died on the fifth. sorry can’t provide link, it was hillarious though.

Anybody heard what the penalty is if caught “dancing” Will Aceh from now refer to dancing as Dirty Dancing? Will Achenese men dance with each other once this ban in place and if so will they be looked as queer? Is there any form of dancing allowed after the ban? Is it still considered dancing if there is no music? If Patrick Swaze was still alive what would he and Baby say about this ban? What happens if an Acehnese policeman get’s caught dancing?

    • TalkingEid

What if they get caught dancing with goats?

  • http://www.facebook.com/dewi.thompson.9 Dewi Thompson

Ah but Lucy there is a bright side to the statistics you have stated here, there were no women dancing during any of of those events listed above. I wonder if any women have tried to find out the name of the guys that were able to satisfy the elephants?

    • Curtis Mayfield

perhaps it wasnt the guys looking for mr merrik … why are non Indo men so popular with the ladies???

  • Good,Bad and Ugly

Then stay the hell out of our lives and everybody else’s lives. You can control your life as you see fit.

  • http://al-terity.blogspot.com/ Alterity

The bright lights of Jakarta have never been more alluring to those who value their freedom. Maybe that’s what the Acehnese women should do: pack their bags and leave.

  • Doggiedoo

If you’re not Indonesian, better to just keep your mouth shut instead of acting like you know what is going on and treating this country like its your own. Gimme a break, why don’t you learn about what so called “respect” a little more and be thankful that we’re letting you in this country do what the hell you want. However you gotta remember though, this is not your country, will never be unless you knocked up one of indonesian chicks (ugliest one) who are into bule and you’ll get your citizenship then. Most of all, we demand you to stop judging and mocking on our culture and belief like you know what’s up. cheers

  • mauriceg

@Doggiedoo (apt name, methinks given your rant), & setfoot – it looks like neither of you has any respect for others. regardless of bleats about living in Western countries (which sounds doubtful, as you wouldn’t be posting your naive, parochial nationalistic, ignorant, threatening, racist nonsense. You would have learned something.
In the Western world we take in refugees and asylum seekers, who can become citizens in time. They are free to criticise without mindless racists pretending to be smart answering them back.
So, start wising up to the backward nightmare that is Aceh and Sharia law. I have the same respect for that as Sharia has for women (ie none). Who are you to demand anything, Doggiedoo? I will certainly not be silenced when human rights are at stake. You and your ilk are the ones who should be silenced. Your kind are destroying the rights of the Acehnese people , their spirit and culture.and incidentally making yourselves look dumb online and in print. That is what is so revolting about what is going on there. You are supporting oppression. You can dress it up all you like in so-called religious piety, but like all the tyrannies of the world, what matters is the end result, not the multifarious ‘isms’ of Communism, socialism, capitalism etc.
You don’t own people in Aceh. You have no rights to brainwash, indoctrinate, punish and treat them badly as you do. Some of us ‘foreigners’ care, You guys don’t.

  • devine

You completely seem to miss the point of this news item. The Islamists in Aceh want to CHANGE our culture! Dancing was part of the Aceh culture for a long long time and now some radicals want to change that…

  • DanielKaimana

If that what Aceh people want and need, let it be.. Call me an old fashion but judging from the ‘dirty dancing’ (goyang ngebor and all alike) performed by mostly dangdut singers is just outrageous. Now is the time for Atjeh to build and stand on what they think right for their ppl. Now is the time to lift the “Serambi Mekah” from chaos to purity. Now is the time to build togetherness over individualism. Good luck brothers and sisters in Atjeh..
