Communication and Information Technology Minister Muhammad Nuh is encouraging legislative and presidential candidates to make use of technology like the Internet and text messaging in their campaigns for the upcoming elections later this year.

“I will not get in the way of candidates who use information and communication technology for their campaigns,” Nuh told a year-end press conference last week, adding that its use would also help improve the public’s electronic literacy and knowledge of information technology.

Many politicians are now accessible online and have established blogs or Web sites, said Nuh. He said that some had set up accounts with social networking sites such as Friendster, the third most visited site in Indonesia, or on Facebook which is now the fifth most popular Web site in Indonesia, in order to reach out to the growing number of Internet users, especially among the younger generation.

Former governor of Jakarta, Sutiyoso, who has openly declared his intention to run as an independent presidential candidate, is accessible online through his Web site www.bangyos.com, while former Golkar party chairman Akbar Tanjung can be found at www.bangakbar.com.

According to the Web site partaiindonesia.com, at least 23 of the 44 political parties registered for the elections have official Web sites, although whether the sites will be regularly updated remained to be seen, said Nuh.
