Air accident investigators and a team from state-owned PT Merpati Nusantara Airlines are preparing to depart for the scene of this morning’s accident after a Merpati 737-300 overshot the runway at Manokwari Airport in West Papua by 200 meters before coming to a stop in a river bed.

At least 20 people have been injured, though Merpati classified the injuries as “minor.”

Merpati spokesman Sukandi told the Jakarta Globe that the plane, carrying 86 passengers and six crew, was “seriously damaged” but downplayed a report the plane had hit a bridge before ending up in the river.

“Thank God all passengers are declared safe, only a few minor injuries but nothing serious,” Sukandi said.

Lt. Col. Leo Rajindra, an officer based in Manokwari, told Detik.com the 737 hit a bridge and was badly damaged.

“The plane was almost split in two, it’s in a very bad condition,” Leo said.

Sukandi said the pilot, Capt. Joko Subiantoro, was a senior Merpati pilot and had more than 11,000 flying hours experience.

Investigators as well as representatives from the airline would depart for the accident scene tonight, he said.

He said the plane was insured.
