The National Police’s narcotics division has seized more than 60 kilograms of illegal drugs so far this month, including massive amounts of Acehnese cannabis, it said on Sunday.

“We’ve confiscated 50 kilograms of marijuana that was shipped here [to Jakarta],” Sr. Comr. Anjan Pramuka Putra, deputy head of the division, said at a press conference.

Anjan said the marijuana had been hidden in packages containing chocolate and shipped to Jakarta from Aceh through a courier service.

Police have made two arrests in the case: Saifullah, from Cianjur, West Java, who is alleged to have received the packages; and Mukharam, from Lhokseumawe in Aceh, who allegedly shipped the drugs.

Police estimated that the marijuana had a street value of Rp 125 million ($14,000). They also said the bust may have prevented up to 100,000 people from picking up a drug habit.

In addition to the 50 kilograms of marijuana, the police also seized 400 grams of heroin, 500 grams of methamphetamine and 210 tablets of ecstasy from separate suspects.

The drugs had a combined street value of more than Rp 1.3 billion, according to the police. They said the drugs were destined for Jakarta and Bali, probably for use around the New Year.

Anjan said the police also broke up a network of international meth smugglers operating from inside Nusakambangan Prison in Central Java.

An inmate identified as Syaiful Anwar was allegedly running the operation, which brought meth in from Nigeria.

The drugs were packed in capsules and swallowed by smugglers, making them difficult to detect at airports, Anjan said.

Police arrested two drug runners from the network at Gambir railway station in Central Jakarta on Nov. 16, and confiscated 500 grams of meth.

National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar called on the public to keep providing the police with information about possible drug smuggling, saying the crime could not be tolerated.

“We’re working hard to make it more difficult for drug dealers to operate,” Boy said.
