Aradio station in Riau Islands run by members of the banned Chinese Falun Gong spiritual movement said on Wednesday that it would fight the latest government attempt to shut it down.
Radio Erabaru, which broadcasts general news and entertainment content from Batam Island, was told this week by the local radio frequency monitoring body to cease transmitting its broadcasts.
Batam’s radio regulator said in its latest warning that Erabaru, which was first told to shut down in 2008, was using a frequency allocated to another station.
However, the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) previously said the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta had complained in 2007 that the radio station was airing content critical of Beijing.
Falun Gong is banned in mainland China and rights groups have accused Beijing of persecuting its members.
“What we are fighting for here is the freedom of the press in Indonesia,” said Erabaru’s director, Raymond Tan.
He said he would resist government pressure to shut down the station, and appealed for regulators “to be neutral, independent and not be hampered by anyone.”
Johny Nelson Simanjuntak, a member of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM), said Erabaru, which started legal proceedings last year in the hope of being allowed to stay on air, was facing unfair restrictions.
He said Komnas HAM would continue to seek clarification from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and the KPI over the issue.
The Chinese Embassy could not be reached for comment.
