President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told the Saudi Arabian ambassador in Jakarta that the Indonesian government must be informed prior to the punishment of any Indonesian migrant workers in that country.
“In the meeting, the president underlined that we need to learn a lesson from what has happened related to the execution of our citizen, Royati [binti Sapubi],” Teuku Faizasyah, a presidential staffer for international relations, said on Tuesday.
“In the future, there should be mechanism to prevent such cases from happening again. This is to ensure that information should be shared according to international norms.”
Indonesian maid Royati was beheaded by the Saudi government earlier this month after admitting to the murder of her employer. The death sentence was carried out without notifying the Indonesian government or the woman’s family, causing tensions to rise between the two countries and leading to calls to repatriate all Indonesians from the kingdom.
Saudi Ambassador Mohammad Amin Al Khayyat promised to convey the president’s message to the Saudi government, Teuku said.
“The president said that in the future, learning from this lesson is important to ensure better bilateral relations on several aspects that have been good,” he added.
