Be the first to write your opinion!

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will seek advice from his ministers before responding to recommendations from House of Representatives regarding the Bank Century case next week, State Secretary Sudi Silalahi said on Friday.

“The president is going to hear his ministers’ opinions this coming Monday concerning the House recommendations on the Century case before responding to it,” Sudi said at his office.

He said that the president has instructed the ministers concerned, mostly those under the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, to study and analyze the letter of the House and submit their opinions on Monday.

Many lawmakers have accused Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Vice President Boediono, Bank Indonesia governor at the time of the bailout, of being responsible for the rescue, but their efforts to have them named by the House inquiry failed.

However, the House committee concluded that there were indications of legal violations in the bailout and that further investigation was needed by law enforcers.

Djoko Suyanto, coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs, said on Wednesday that he could not give any recommendation at this stage as he had not read the letter yet.

But he said that because it was an official state letter, the response should not be rushed and be “in order and right.”

Sudi that the letter dealt with legal issues and was very detailed, calling for careful examination.

Asked whether the president was going to allow Sri Mulyani to be investigated by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Sudi said that no such permission was needed.

“If the case is handled by the KPK, it needs no permission from the president,” he said. “But if it is the police or the attorney general that investigate, they have to ask the president to give written agreement.”

Refli Harun, an expert in state administration at the University of Indonesia, said he believed there would be nothing significant in the ministers’ recommendations since Yudhoyono himself had already given a quick response through his speech defending his aides made a day after the House reached its final conclusion on the case.

He said that Yudhoyono’s request for his ministers’ recommendations was a mere procedural bureaucratic process.
