The Supreme Court on Thursday swore in its new secretary, Nurhadi, who replaces the retiring Rum Nessa.

Nurhadi was previously the court’s spokesman. Supreme Court chief Harifin Tumpa also swore in three more high-ranking officials.

Aco Nur, who previously served as the court’s employment bureau chief, has been appointed as the court’s administrative affairs bureau chief.

Siti Nurjannah has been appointed to the court’s human resource development and training division. She was previously the court’s general crime secretary.

The court also appointed Suroso Ono as the its chief clerks. Suroso was previously deputy clerk on special crimes.

Harifin said the court’s secretary no longer needed to be a judge, as previously required, but did not explain the change.

He said the new secretary would play an important role as the court handled more cases each year. In 2006 it heard around 6,000 cases while in 2010 it was more than 13,000.

“I hope with this appointment the cases are distributed proportionally,” he said.

In their oath, the new officials vowed to maintain secrecy in cases handled by the court and not to accept gifts from parties with vested interests.

“I hope that you put the law and your work ahead of yourself. I hope you all will work hard, the best that you can, and preserve the good name of the Supreme Court,” Harifin said at the ceremony.

The swearing-in was attended by all the Supreme Court judges.

Attorney General Basrief Arief also attended the event, as did National Police Chief Gen. Timur Pradopo, the chief of the Constitutional Court, Mahfud M.D., National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) chairman Ifdhal Kasim, Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) chairman Abdul Haris Semendawai and United Development Party (PPP) lawmaker Ahmad Yani.
