Having filed a report with the National Commission on Violence Against Women, Tara Pradipta Laksmi, 19, on Monday reported spiritual guru Anand Krishna to the Jakarta Police for allegedly sexually abusing her.

Accompanied by a lawyer and relatives, Tara told police officers that the alleged abuse occurred after she had been hypnotized.

“I could not turn him down. It was as if I was hypnotized. I had to obey the teacher’s [Anand’s] every wish,” Tara said. However, she said she had not had sexual intercourse with Anand.

At least one other woman has complained about Anand to the commission, also known as Komnas Perempuan.

On Sunday, Anand, 54, told the Jakarta Globe that the allegations were false and that he had never conducted hypnotherapy and had not done one-on-one consultations for at least five or six years.

Tara said she had regularly attended sessions at Anand’s meditation centers beginning in 2008 but had stopped going after July 2009. She said it took awhile before she could muster the courage to report him to the commission.

“It takes energy and courage to report this,” Tara said. “The sessions I took at his center were something like yoga. They also provide massages at their Ayurveda Spa but I never took that one.”

Her lawyer, Agung Mattauch, said Tara joined the sessions because her mother took them as well, and that Tara’s mother had been attending the meditation sessions for five years.

“Nothing ever happened to the mother,” Agung said, adding that Anand’s alleged sexual abuse included “feeling Tara up and even kissing her. But Tara could not refuse.”

“We brought Anand’s e-mails to Tara as proof. They are sensual in nature. There is also a psychiatric report and the testimony of witnesses,” Agung said.

Tara was “cleansed” of her alleged hypnotic state shortly after her mother started growing suspicious of Tara’s behavior.

“It was then that my mother took me to a hypnotherapist,” Tara said.

“My mind was cleansed and I was isolated for three months. I couldn’t meet anybody during therapy.” Shortly after receiving hypnotherapy, she reported Anand to the commission before taking the case to the police.

On Sunday, Arimbi Heroeputri, a senior official at the commission, said the complaints against Anand alleged that he had touched more than two women at his centers, telling them it was part of the process. Anand is alleged to have hugged, caressed and kissed his female students.

The alleged harassment took place at his centers in Sunter and Fatmawati in Jakarta, and in Bogor. Anand has said the allegations are the work of envious people.

“Meditation shall continue despite the libel,” he wrote on his Web site.
