Three Indonesian university students drowned attempting to cross a flood-swollen river in Magelang, Central Java, emergency services confirmed on Friday.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) identified the deceased as Satya Wacana Christian University Salatiga students Dwi Susanti and Natan Nael Tri Kurniawan, from Ungaran and Demak respectively, and Soegijapranata Catholic University Semarang student Debora/Debi, also from Demak.

BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the three friends were swept away attempting to cross Juweh River, which is a branch of the larger Pabelan River, in Kedung Kayang on Thursday.

The bodies have been recovered.

Five other students survived the ordeal.

Sutopo said their had been an influx of tourists to the area attracted by the lahar flowing from the Mount Merapi volcano.

“Visitors should be more aware and should avoid areas that are prone to floods and lahar,” Sutopi said, referring to the mixture of ash and water that sets with the consistency of concrete.
