I am afraid the small but vocal religious extremist is winning in Indonesia... little by little... sad very sad indeed.

My housing complex is located very near to these so called 'cafes'. We're not really bothered by them. These cafes are nothing like starbux or coffee bean though. Most of them are houses or small buildings that got transformed into 'cafes' with loud dangdut music that plays from 7 pm onwards, and not-so-pretty-nor-slim girls in hot pants and tank tops standing at the side of the road (not a very pretty sight). I don't know if they're doing anything illegal inside those cafes though (all of them are window-less). And judging by the police cars that parked there regularly once a week I suppose they are not doing anything illegal, rite? :). Like I said before they didn't really bother us living near by and I don't think I've ever seen any child playing near them. But it would've been nicer to see trees there instead of waving girls ;)

Hey there is some immoral cafes around here too... wanna come over for an investigation? At 3am the serve beer for 1/2 price...

Depok. The deputy commission head of the Depok legislative council urged the local government to close down what she considers to be an “immoral cafe” in Cimanggis, Depok.

“The cafe has made people living around it uneasy,” said Sri Rahayu, the wife of communications and information minister Tifatul Sembiring, on Wednesday. “The cafe has clearly tainted the [Depok] government’s image, which was declared a good city for children.”

She claimed people living near the cafe are disturbed by its 5 a.m. closing time and rumors about rooms that are allegedly used for prostitution.

“I have directly investigated the location,” Sri said urging the government to warn the cafe.

Depok deputy mayor Idris Abdul Somad said that he has been composing a warning letter that will be sent three times to the cafe.

“We will give time by issuing three warning letters over three weeks,” he said. “If the cafe has not been dismantled, it will be done forcefully.”
