An antismoking group has praised a Jakarta hotel for becoming the first 100 percent nonsmoking hotel in the country.

Bungon Ritthiphakdee, director of the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (Seatca), said Atlet Century Park Hotel deserved kudos.

“Atlet Century Park Hotel Jakarta provides the freshest air in the country, and we commend the officials and staff for satisfactorily ensuring that all its guest rooms, function areas and restaurants are smoke-free,” he said.

“Together with our partners, we will now be regular patrons of the hotel.”

The hotel’s human resources manager, B. Edy Nugroho, said the move made good business sense. “Making our hotel 100 percent smoke-free has not affected our occupancy rate. In fact, it has significantly increased the inflow of guests. Those who smoke respect our policy because they can see that we are serious about it.”

He said violators would be fined Rp 500,000 ($56) and that no-smoking signs bearing Breathe Freely Campaign and Smoke-Free Jakarta messages were posted prominently on all floors and in the lobby.

A 100 percent smoke-free Century Park Hotel in Bali is on its way, Edy added.
