The Jakarta Globe won two awards on Monday from the Environment Ministry for its comprehensive coverage of environmental issues throughout the year.
At the ministry’s Media Award 2011 ceremony, the Globe was among 11 news publications recognized for publishing the most number of reports on a wide range of environmental concerns.
The other publications included Kompas, Koran Tempo, Media Indonesia, Seputar Indonesia, Indo Pos, the Jakarta Post, Republika, Sinar Harapan, Suara Pembaruan and Rakyat Merdeka.
The Globe’s Fidelis E. Satriastanti also won an award for writing the most environmental stories, which she shared with Ichwan Susanto from Kompas and Sulung Prasetyo from Sinar Harapan.
The award for the best feature reporting went to M. Kurniawan and Cornelius Helmy from Kompas, Untung Widyanto from Koran Tempo, and Lukas Adi Prasetyo from Kompas.
“These awards are handed out to the various publications in recognition of their capacity to put out news and information about environmental issues,” Hermien Roosita, the ministry secretary, said at the event.
Balthasar Kambuaya, the environment minister, said the media played a crucial role in highlighting the issues.
“These days people are talking a lot about the environment, but they’re not acting,” he said.
“My hope is that the media can [prompt them to act] by continuing to raise the issues of the environment and biodiversity.”
