Hewlett-Packard is set to come out with a new line of laser printers that are more environment-friendly and cost-efficient for small- to medium-sized businesses.

One of the “green” changes worth mentioning in HP’s latest printer models is the new auto-on/auto-off feature.

When not in use, the auto-off function will automatically power down printers to an energy-conservation mode.

HP says that, compared to the sleep mode feature of other printers on the market, its new technology will help users save up to three times as much energy because the printer consumes less than one watt of power.

Even in sleep mode, the auto-on function can wake the printer up to print its first page in less than a couple of minutes. Companies can also customize and preset the time they want the printer switched off.

“I think we really want to do our part by making sure that when you print, you save on cost,” said Sim Yee Peng, HP’s Asia Pacific product manager.

The current obsession with printing out everything is not only a waste of paper and ink, it also has an impact that is more detrimental to the environment than the amount of energy the machine consumes.

Acknowledging that most businesses still rely heavily on printing materials, Sim says that HP tries to help people print, but print less.

For instance, when photocopying ID cards, the newer printers are able to scan both sides of the card but print on only one piece of paper.

“Going green is a great concept, but if you die along the way, it’s tough,” Sim explains. “That’s why it’s important that you save on costs first, before you save the planet.”

The most outstanding of the recent upgrades has been the HP Smart Install, which reduces the installation speed for printers to under two minutes.

Installing printers that have this program is as simple as plugging them into your computer’s USB port. No installation CDs are required.

However, if you’re a Mac or Linux user, the convenience of HP Smart Install does not extend to you. The technology is still only exclusive for Windows, even though most of HP’s new printers are compatible with Mac OS X version 10.4 and higher.

The improvements mentioned above are only available in eight of HP’s latest LaserJet printers.

According to Lydia Budianto, the company’s Indonesia market development manager, the new printers will hit the shelves of larger electronic stores before they become available at supermarkets.
