We asked: How much credit should the government take for the health of the economy?
You replied:
Clearly, the government can’t take the credit for everything. It laid the foundations with its regulations and policies, but the rest is not its doing.
Hananto H, Jakarta
I’d say it can take half of the credit. Its prudent financial policies are worthy of praise, but it should not stick slavishly to the same policies because conditions change. Policies should be adapted to the times.

We asked: Do you think Indonesia is becoming a more attractive target for international investors?
You replied:
Definitely foreign investors are interested in investing here. Businessmen are businessmen. They go to places where they can make money. If our lawmakers could just concentrate more on making laws, I think we would even fare better and become even more attractive to foreign investors also. Let’s hope so.
Mela, Jakarta
If we want to be attractive, we should play clean. No corruption, no excessive government intervention, no overlapping and conflicting regulations. And we must create a dependable judicial system. When will our government understand that we are in no way inferior to other nations and should be able to negotiate any investment deal on an equal footing. We have the market, the manpower and the natural resources but unfortunately we still have the shameful tag of being the nation that is perceived as most corrupt in the region.
Gancar, Jakarta
I’m not so sure. As long as our current bureaucratic system and corrupt tendencies persist, we will lose to our neighbors.
Ahmad Sukanda, Tangerang
Indonesia has everything it needs to attract investors but we should definitively put our house in order first if we wish to get capital flowing in.
