Malaysian Fishermen Report Increased Catches After Quake
Fishermen in East Coast Malaysian states had extraordinarily plentiful catches in their nets on Wednesday, perhaps due to the recent earthquake off West Sumatra. Catches of up to 5,000 kilograms of ikan duri (marine catfish) were reported after only two hours at sea.
Azmi Daud, the director of the Eastern Region Department of Meteorology, said on Thursday that it was a common phenomenon for marine fish to seek shelter in safer waters when there was a natural disaster like an undersea earthquake.
Mat Zin Omar said it was his biggest catch in 15 years as a fisherman. “Normally, my catch is around 1,000 kilograms, Wednesday’s was extraordinary,” he said.
Fishermen were selling the catfish to fish mongers at $1.35 per kg.
