@Citrus. Regardless of what you think of me. Please do the research about TNI equipment. It will tell you how bad this country needs to address procurement of any modern equipment to cover vast territory.

About the administration cleaning I couldn't agree more, it needs to be done, QUICK. I would love to see it almost free of any wrong doing. That would be great.

Please get more info regarding this matter. In my point of view is TNI try to get MEF done ASAP, and DPR on this MBT case being the obstacle because they see no chance of getting any money out of it, at least not much.

IF you were Indonesian, you will know firsthand on how frustrating the government corruption is.

IF you are not, lucky you.....

BTW NKRI HARGA MATI

Modern wars are won by whichever side is capable of achieving air superiority. 2nd hand Tanks won't achieve that. Indonesia defence procurement seems to be more about graft than meeting operational requirements.

Fair comments calling for the govt to fix domestic problems first before trying to become a military power. However, in the event that the DPR (kindergarten) makes a big fuss over accusations that Malaysia is stealing its resource rich Ambalat Block and calls for the deployment of TNI AL to secure the said area, poor TNI AL knows it will be on the end of a massive hiding to none from its neighbour with its current fleet of East German junk. At the end of the day, the problem is not whether they buy this fancy weapon or that fancy one, it is the age old problem of whether they will be maintained and looked after properly. Something that we Indonesians are not famous for.

rex,

I knew it, you are one of those 'don't mess with us (especially our border) or we will declare a war yada yada yada yada. Clean up Indonesian administration integrity first before you talk about ripping another country off with your tank and stuff. All you think about is border border border when Indonesia can hanrdly managed its whole nation right now. Seriously, there are more important issues than border disputes with Malaysia.

@Rule. I beg to differ. If Indonesian force ever come to the point of well equipped, let say to the level of which India or China, no other nation can easily steal part of Indo integrity.

@valkyrie. I'm so sorry for being uneducated but I promise, I'm leaning everyday so I can be as educated as you I thought its a free forum, I'm not trying to offend any body, just expressing my opinion. I apologize if my remark hurt your high educated self there.

Part of my comment is for the house cleaning. DPR doesnt approve MBT purchase due to their corrupt mind. Not much profit for them since this purchase is Government on Government type deal.

Legislator Tubagus Hasanuddin said the House of Representatives had been surprised by media reports on the Defense Ministry’s plan to purchase 100 Leopard tanks from the Netherlands at a cost of nearly $600 million.

“So far, we have not received any official statement from the ministry indicating that they would be buying the tanks,” said Tubagus, a deputy chairman of House Commission I, which oversees defense and foreign affairs.

The lawmaker from the opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) said the commission would not issue a decision on the planned purchase until it had more information.

According to Tubagus, the ministry had invited commission members on a visit to the Netherlands a few weeks ago, which the lawmakers had declined.

“The ministry’s invitation to join them on the visit should not be seen as our endorsement of the planned purchase,” he said. “If we wanted to make the visit, we would have done it at our own expense.”

Commission members will explore a possible probe into the political aspects of the procurement, he said.

The planned purchase has been dogged by criticism since being announced a few months ago. Most of the legislators on Commission I have spoken out against it and called on the government to rethink it.

Commission member Yahya Sacawirya, from the Democrats, cited two concerns: the technical specifications of the tank and the procurement process itself.

“We need to consider the use and benefits of such a weapon system and whether it is suitable for conditions here,” he said.

Yahya also warned the Defense Ministry against making the purchase without first receiving the approval of the House. “We need to hear the details behind the plan,” he said.
