The legislature’s Honor Council met on Tuesday with leaders at the House of Representatives to discuss the controversial case of the costly renovation of a meeting room for the Budget Committee.

Fahri Hamzah, a member of the Honor Council, said that two separate meetings would be held, one with House Speaker Marzuki Ali at noon and another with the four deputy speakers two hours later.

The meetings, Fahri said, “are follow-ups of the legal and ethical problems linked to the Budget Committee room.”

In the meeting with Marzuki, who is also chairman of the House’s Household Affairs Committee (BURT), certain issues needed to be clarified, Fahri said, though he did not elaborate.

He said that the council had earlier met with Marzuki’s deputies at the BURT.

M. Prakosa, chairman of the Honor Council, said his team needed to talk with Marzuki about the legal actions that would follow if there were indications of crimes relating to the renovation. The council, he said, had decided to leave the matter of procedural and regulatory violations to the State Finance Development Comptroller (BPKP).

As for whether the renovation specifications were appropriate, he said, the council planned to allow the Household Affairs Committee to decide.

“If there are indications of any crime, it will be handled by law enforcers,” Fahri said. “The matter of violations will be handled by the state financial auditing institutions.”

Prakosa said the Honor Council had discovered several violations in the Rp 20 billion ($2.2 million) renovation of the Budget Committee meeting room and was asking the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to follow up on those findings.

He said there were five violations, including the Budget Committee coordinating directly with the House Secretariat General instead of with the BURT, a high price standard, the preponderance of imported products used, the luxurious nature of the product and the functionality of the room.
