Media tycoon Hary Tanoesoedibjo has confirmed he has joined the fledgling National Democratic Party, making his first appearance during the party’s leadership board meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Hary Tanoe, who has an extensive media empire, including the Seputar Indonesia daily newspaper, RCTI, Global TV and MNC TV, joins party founder Surya Paloh, who owns daily newspaper Media Indonesia and news network Metro TV, which is thick with coverage of the party, also known as NasDem.
Speaking to Detik.com on Wednesday, NasDem chairman Patrice Rio Capella said Hary’s support would help lift the party’s profile “a lot.”
“He has a lot of media organizations,” he said, “all of them will help a lot.”
Speaking during Wednesday’s meeting at Ancol in North Jakarta, Nasdem deputy chairman Sugeng Suparwoto said Hary, “a young businessman and a professional with a vision for the nation ... has joined the NasDem Party.”
Patrice said Harry had been appointed to head the party’s board of experts.
The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights is yet to confirm NasDem as an official party.
“We will consolidate our strength to recruit as many new members as possible,” Patrice said.
