Sutjipto,
a reformasi era political activist and former secretary general of the
Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, passed away on Thursday
afternoon in a Surabaya hospital. He was 66.
The death was announced by Eko Suwanto, deputy chief of Yogyakarta branch of the party known as PDI-P.
“He died earlier at around 5:30 p.m.,” Eko said, adding that Sutjipto had been treated at Darmo Hospital for a stroke.
Sutjipto, or Pak Tjip as he was fondly known, was the party’s national secretary general from 2000 to 2005.
His political career began when he became a student activist in 1964.
“Let
us pray that the deceased, Pak Tjip, goes to heaven, and that his
family and our party is steadfast in maintaining the values, beliefs and
ideals that he fought for,” Eko said.
