All Blacks utility back Tamati Ellison will play for a Japanese club later this year, effectively ending his chances of being involved in the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.

Ellison, 26, will activate an out-clause in his New Zealand Rugby Union contract and will miss the provincial championship for Wellington, the Dominion Post newspaper reported on Friday. His agent, Bruce Sharrock, said Ellison was turning his back on domestic rugby in order to secure the financial future of his young family.

The NZRU has a policy of only selecting players based in New Zealand for the All Blacks. Ellison has been a star player in New Zealand competition over the past two seasons. Reuters
