Julian Huxley has signed a deal with new Super 15 club Melbourne Rebels only months after returning to professional rugby following two years recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumor.

Huxley, who made a comeback with the ACT Brumbies this season, is the 19th signing for the Rebels, who will enter the expanded Super rugby competition in 2011.

The 30-year-old Huxley played nine tests at fullback for Australia in 2007, but his career stalled due to the surgery.

Rebels coaching director Rod Macqueen, who guided Australia to its 1999 World Cup victory and to its 2001 series win over the British and Irish Lions, announced Huxley’s signing on Wednesday.

“Julian has shown great form since his return. He brings with him a fantastic attitude to life and the game we can all learn from,” Macqueen said.

“He is an intelligent player who will make a significant contribution to the Rebels.”

The Rebels will be Huxley’s third Super rugby club after two stints with the Brumbies around his four seasons with the Queensland Reds until 2006.

“I’ve had amazing support from the Brumbies, particularly over the last two years, and now need to start a new chapter in my life,” Huxley said. “It’s rare to get the opportunity to be a part of a start-up, to help build the foundations of a club.

“I have enormous respect for Rod Macqueen and look forward to helping him deliver on his determination to do things differently with the Melbourne Rebels. I have a more holistic approach to life through my recent experience, and I expect Melbourne to offer as much off the field as on.”

Huxley’s signing comes two days after the Rebels signed Japan-based utility back James Hilgendorf, prop Heath Tessman and former Wallaby lock Alister Campbell.
