New Zealand police have condemned the actions of a Sunday newspaper that asked people masquerading as terrorists to smuggle fake bombs into two Super 14 rugby matches last weekend.

Spokesman Jon Neilson on Friday said police were unlikely to charge the Sunday Star-Times over the stunt, in which an undisclosed number of fake bombs were carried into matches at Hamilton and Christchurch, apparently to test security measures.

Police Minister Judith Collins described the paper’s actions as “unbelievably stupid and irresponsible.” The Sunday Star-Times declined comment.
