Adriyanti Firdasati showed nerves of steel in a hard-fought three-set victory over Xing Aiying of Singapore at the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold on Thursday and reached the quarterfinals for the first time in a tournament this season.
Indonesia’s lone representative in the women’s singles, world No.27 Adriyanti prevailed over Xing 21-17, 19-21, 22-20 in a match that lasted 53 minutes at Cotai Arena.
Adriyanti will next face Eriko Hirose of Japan.
In men’s singles, world No.8 Simon Santoso needed 40 minutes to come away with a 21-17, 21-17 victory over countryman Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka.
In the quarterfinals, Simon will face Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki, the world No.46.
Simon has yet to win a title this season, with his best results coming in the Singapore Open and the Indonesia Open, where he went as far as the quarterfinals.
Top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia also advanced to the last eight, beating Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-12, 21-19. Lee, the world No.1, next takes on Shon Wan-ho of South Korea, who pulled off a 23-21, 19-21, 21-18 upset win over No.8 seed Hu Yun of Hong Kong.
In mixed doubles, three Indonesian pairs clinched quarterfinal berths.
Top seeds Hendra Aprida Gunawan and Vita Marissa fought back from a set down to defeat Taiwan’s Lee Sheng Mu and Chien Yu Chin 25-27, 21-16, 21-12.
Hendra and Vita have yet to win a title this season. The world No.3 pair fell short of the top prize in the Singapore Open when they were ousted in the semifinals by Denmark’s Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl.
In the last eight round, Hendra and Vita will take on countrymen Muhammad Rijal and Debby Susanto, who defeated Japan’s Kenichi Hayakawa and Shizuka Matsuo 21-15, 21-15 to advance.
Fran Kurniawan Teng and Pia Zebadiah Bernadet also progressed, after taking just 27 minutes to oust Korean pair Shin Baek-Cheol and Yoo Hyun-young 21-11, 21-18.
