Kingston. India hopes to keep the winning momentum when it faces the West Indies in the second one-day international on Sunday at Sabina Park.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side holds a 1-0 lead in the four-match series after it won a high-scoring opening match on Friday at the same venue by 20 runs.
Yuvraj Singh set India up for victory by scoring his 12th century in one-day internationals, with a boundary-laced 131 runs from 102 balls which propelled the visitors to 339 for six from their 50 overs.
Ashish Nehra and Yusuf Pathan then captured three wickets apiece to strangle the West Indies’s batting, as India dismissed its hosts for 319 to complete victory with 11 balls to spare.
Dhoni felt that things got too close for comfort in the closing stages of the match.
“Most of the guys thought that we had won the game when the West Indies were seven wickets down, but it was a mistake and, hopefully, we won’t repeat it,” he said. “It was much closer than I thought.”
Dhoni felt things had been set up, following Yuvraj’s breathtaking batting which yielded 10 fours and seven sixes.
“[Yuvraj’s] innings was one more brilliant knock from him,” the Indian captain said. “He really took the game away from the West Indies, that’s for sure.”
The West Indies put up a brave fight in its chase, but the constant fall of wickets undermined its effort, despite its rate being close to India’s.
Unlike India, it did not have a Yuvraj-type innings to swing the match their way, although Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit the top score of 63.
