Indonesia Secures First Medal at Asian Youth Games
Nanjing, China. Indonesian swimmer Lorenza Monalisa Arieswaty finished third in the women’s 200-meter butterfly event on Monday evening, bagging Indonesia’s first medal at this year’s Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China.
Monalisa finished in 135.10 seconds, just a hair’s breadth behind Park Jin-Young of South Korea, who finished first, and second-placed Sutasinee Pankaew of Thailand.
The bronze medal puts Indonesia 18th in the overall standings. Indonesia’s chef de mission Ade Lukman said that Monalisa was the nation’s best hope for a medal at the Games.
“We predicted it,” Ade said. “We hope to see more of our athletes win medals while they have the chance. Our target is to improve upon our previous achievements.”
Indonesia had its moment on the podium at the inaugural Asian Youth Games in Singapore in 2009 when Ade Candra Rachmawan and I Gede Eka Agustiawan secured Indonesia’s lone bronze in the men’s beach volleyball.
