While Saturday was a day to remember for the Jakarta Bintangs for their success in getting the Jakarta Football League up and running, they could not replicate that accomplishment on the field.
A shorthanded Bintangs side lost 10.13 (73) to 8.8 (56) to the visiting Singapore Wombats, finalists at the last two Asian Championship tournaments.
“Obviously we’re not sharp. We were a little depleted in numbers today because we had some guys who were out on work or in Australia,” Jakarta coach Matt Jolly said. “We’re certainly not going to make excuses. [Singapore] were depleted, too. They played well, they had systems and ran them very well.”
In addition to working in as many as eight new faces, departing Bintangs team member Jason Moynihan received one last run-out and a warm-hearted verbal savaging following the match.
The Bintangs return to action on April 24 and 25 as they travel to Balikpapan. They will face the host Borneo Bears and Bali Geckos as part of an Anzac Day tournament.
In the junior matches, Cileungsi beat Pasar Minggu 3.10 (28) to 0.1 (1), with Arnoa of Cileungsi and Pasar Minggu’s Indra being named the best on the pitch. Bogor won 8.4 (52) to 1.0 (6) over Kelender, with Ono (Bogor) and Tebe (Kelender) similarly honored, and the junior competition wrapped up with Andri (Depok) and Rizal (Setia Budi) taking the honors after Depok defeated Setia Budi 7.6 (48) to 6.1 (37).
