Melbourne. The most anticipated early season match in the Australian Football League turned out to be a no contest with top-of-the-table Collingwood cruising past second-place Fremantle by 36 points.

The Magpies improved to seven wins and one loss this season and have a four-point advantage in the standings over the Dockers, who now have six wins and two losses.

Collingwood was led by forward Travis Cloke with five goals as the Magpies turned a 10-point halftime lead into a 41-point advantage by the end of the third quarter.

Collingwood faces defending champion Geelong next Friday, but coach Mick Malthouse was not ready to discuss that matchup on Friday night at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“It’s just another game of football in Round 9,” Malthouse said.

Meanwhile, Barry Hall scored five goals as the Western Bulldogs beat his former club, Sydney, by 38 points. The Bulldogs scored 10 goals in the second and third quarters to set up the 14.17 (101) to 9.9 (63) victory.

West Coast scored a rare away victory, downing Melbourne 10.15 (75) to 6.10 (46) at the MCG. The win was just the Eagles’ second away from Perth’s Subiaco Oval in 25 attempts, with last season’s Round 19 win over the Bulldogs in Melbourne their only other since 2007.

North Melbourne beat Adelaide 12.12 (84) to 11.9 (75) at Etihad Stadium, and Geelong forward Steve Johnson kicked six goals as the Cats completed an 81-point rout of injury-depleted Brisbane, 24.11 (155) to 10.14 (74).

Hawthorn survived a determined Richmond comeback attempt to end a six-match losing streak with a 13.11 (89) to 13.8 (86) win over the winless Tigers. Carlton, trailing by nine points after three quarters, overpowered Port Adelaide in the final quarter, scoring six goals to one to win 17.16 (118) to 14.8 (92).

Essendon beat St. Kilda 14.9 (93) to 11.15 (81) in the final match of the round.
