Indianapolis. Tom Brady threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Danny Woodhead with eight seconds to play in the second quarter as New England took a 10-9 half-time lead over the New York Giants in Super Bowl 46 on Sunday.

Brady, matching John Elway’s all-time record by making his fifth Super Bowl start, marched the Patriots 96 yards in 3:55 for the touchdown, with Stephen Gostkowski’s conversion kick providing the slim half-time edge.

Both teams seek their fourth all-time victory in the National Football League championship spectacle, the Patriots trying for their fourth in 11 years -- all with Brady as quarterback.

Jason Pierre-Paul batted down a Brady pass to end a 60-yard Patriots drive and New England settled for a 29-yard field goal by Gostkowski to pull within 9-3 just 72 seconds into the second quarter.

Two Patriots penalties in the shadow of their own end zone helped the Giants seize a 9-0 lead after only 11:36 had elapsed.

New England’s Sterling Moore forced a fumble from Giants receiver Victor Cruz and the Patriots recovered, but the play was wiped out by a penalty, New England having had too many men on the field.

Two plays later, Giants quarterback Eli Manning flipped a two-yard touchdown pass to Cruz and the Giants led 9-0.

New York had opened the scoring 5:28 earlier when Brady was whistled for an intentional grounding penalty while standing in the end zone on New England’s first offensive play. The rare defensive score gave the Giants a 2-0 edge.
