Shanghai. Chinese teenager Sun Yang broke the oldest-standing world record in Sunday's world swimming championship finale while United States star Ryan Lochte got a fifth gold medal.

Lochte completed consecutive medley world doubles by destroying the opposition in the 400m event while Sun was in a world of his own in the 1,500m freestyle race.

Sun won the gold in 14 minutes 34.14 seconds ahead of Canadian Ryan Cochrane who finished in 14.44.46, while the bronze went to Gergo Kis of Hungary in 14.45.66.

Sun was over two seconds behind Australian Grant Hackett's split from 10 years and two days ago going into the final 100m.

But, roared on by the Shanghai home crowd, an incredible 25.94 seconds on the final 50m saw the 19-year-old shave 0.42 seconds off Hackett's mark of 14:34.56.

It was the second gold medal for Sun, who had earlier won the men's 800m event. He also won a silver for the men's 400m and a bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Sun's record is only the second to be broken at these championships and the second long-course world record to be broken since the sport's governing body FINA introduced a ban of the performance-enhancing high-tech body suits.

Lochte had earlier in the week broken his own 200m individual medley world record.

Lochte on Sunday clocked 4 minutes 7.13 seconds to win the 400m individual medley from team-mate Tyler Clary, who was more than four seconds behind on 4:11.17. The bronze medal went to Japan's Yuya Horihata in 4:11.98.

Lochte's other titles came in the 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 4x200m freestyle relay.

Lochte, who equaled Michael Phelps' gold tally from the Rome world championships, also has a bronze medal from the men's 4x100m freestyle relay, although he did not swim in the final.

There was speculation that he could swim in the US 4x100m medley relay team, but he did not.

His absence though, made no difference to the American team, that still won the gold medal in 3:32.06 thanks to dominant butterfly leg from Phelps, who picked up his 26th gold at the worlds.
