Just when Indonesia thought it would avoid the bug wreaking havoc on the inaugural Asian Youth Games, it, too, got hit by the H1N1 virus.

Cahya Aziz, the Indonesian team’s deputy chef de mission in Singapore, confirmed on Tuesday that team official Farok Togolobe has been quarantined at Singapore General Hospital since Monday. “FR [the official’s initials] had tested positive for the H1N1 virus and is quarantined at the hospital now and will stay there until completely healed. It usually takes two weeks to fully recover from the virus,” Cahya told the Jakarta Globe in an e-mail message.

“This morning I received a text message from FR that said he is in better condition, though his body temperature is still around 38 degrees Celsius.”

Farok was misidentified as an athlete in a story by state-run news agency Antara that ran in the July 7 edition of the Jakarta Globe.

Cahya said Farok came down with a high fever on Saturday and immediately checked with team doctor Eny Waluyan. He was examined by a Singapore Health Ministry official after his fever remained high on Sunday.

Youth Games organizers will take care of Farok’s medical expenses until he is out of the hospital, Cahya added.

Farok’s roommate IM, another team official, is being quarantined by the Singaporean government. The team refused to reveal the full name as per the individual’s request.

“As of today’s test, IM hasn’t been infected by the virus, but he has to stay in an isolation room until further notice as a precaution,” Cahya said on Tuesday.

The H1N1 outbreak cast a pall on the Games even before they began. A football player from the Philippines came down with the virus on June 19, forcing his team into quarantine and matches against the Philippines to be postponed. Three days later, four Hong Kong footballers also caught the virus.

One day before the opening ceremonies, Malaysia withdrew all but two of its 79 athletes in response to the outbreak at the behest of the Malaysian Education Ministry.

Indonesia finished tied for 21st place in the medal standings with one bronze medal.
