It's not the player's fault and the athlete's development officer should take care of the athletes and keep motivate them.

Indonesia is on the verge of a swift return to Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Group II after losing all of its Group I matches.

South Korea beat Indonesia 2-1 in their Group B finale at the Shenzhen Luohu Tennis Center in Guangdong, China, on Friday. Indonesia now faces a relegation playoff against Uzbekistan.

Indonesia, which had won all five previous meetings against South Korea, fell behind when Jessy Rompies lost 6-4, 6-1 to Han Sung-hee. Ayu Fani Damayanti leveled the tie and scored Indonesia’s first win in eight Division I matches by defeating Kim So-jung 6-2, 7-6 (6).

Ayu and Jessy teamed up for the deciding doubles match and looked to be in good shape after winning the first set. Han and Yoo Mi rallied for a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 win, though, avoiding last place in the group.

Kresno Merdiko, an Indonesian Lawn Tennis Association (Pelti) athletes’ development official, put the blame on the players.

“[South Korea] was supposed to be the team we could beat in this stage,” Kresno said in a phone interview. “I think they lacked motivation after having good results at the [Southeast Asian] Games. They clearly didn’t show the same fighting spirit here.”

Ayu won women’s singles gold in the SEA Games. Indonesia took the women’s team silver after losing to Thailand in the final.

Indonesia faces Uzbekistan today, with the loser dropping into Group II for next season. Pool B winner Kazakhstan meets China in a promotion playoff.
