If everything plays out as it looks on paper, Indonesia’s Davis Cup tie against Malaysia should be a walk in the park.
The team travels to the National Tennis Center in Kuala Lumpur today for an Asia/Oceania Group II qualifying tie against a foe it has beaten in their three meetings since 1982. The last encounter was a 5-0 Indonesian sweep in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, in 2006.
Christopher Rungkat captains the squad, which also includes Sunu Wahyu Trijati, Ketut Nesa Arta and David Agung Susanto.
“The only Malaysian we have to watch carefully is Si Yew-Ming. He is a senior player with Davis Cup experience,” Ferry Raturandang, deputy secretary general of the Indonesian Tennis Federation, said in phone interview on Thursday. “The rest of Malaysia team is not so threatening.”
Si, 31, has played in Malaysia’s Davis Cup team since 1999. As the nation’s second-best player, he will likely meet Christopher in today’s first singles match.
The two have yet to face each other, but Christopher — ranked 1,250th in the world — has a better world standing than the Malaysian at 1,463rd.
“Christopher has had up and down performances recently, but I’m still optimistic that he can win,” Ferry said.
Sunu is scheduled to face Malaysian No. 1 Adam Jaya in today’s other singles match.
“I’m ready for the match, and I believe we can continue Indonesia’s domination over Malaysia,” 1,739th-ranked Sunu told the Jakarta Globe by text message. “I hope we can end the first day with a 2-0 score.”
If Indonesia wins, it will face Thailand or Pacific Oceania — a team consisting of players from islands throughout Oceania with the exception of Australia and New Zealand — in the Group II semifinals.
“The match against Malaysia, I think, will be our warm up before playing against Thailand in the next round,” Ferry said. “Our target is to qualify for Group I, and Thailand will be tough to beat.”
Indonesia dropped into Group II in 2005 after losing 4-1 to Thailand in a Group I relegation playoff. It lost 5-0 to New Zealand in last year’s Group II semifinals.
